How to Flow Text in Adobe InDesign

Use this interactive demo to learn how to flow text in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

There are two ways to flow text in Adobe InDesign: by placing it on a new page or by creating a new text box, as illustrated in the step-by-step guide below.

‍

  1. To flow text or continue overset text in Adobe InDesign, select the text frame to activate it, then click the ‘+’ icon in the lower-right corner of the frame.
  2. The hidden text is now attached to your cursor, indicated by a change in the frame color and icon. You have two ways to flow the text:
  3. You can go to a new page and click to place the text, allowing it to flow seamlessly within the blank document.
  4. Or create a new text box by dragging your cursor (while holding the loaded text) beside the first text box to form columns, or draw a new text box on another page.

📌 Why this matters

Text flowing prevents awkward white space and fragmented reading experiences when your content exceeds a single text frame. You maintain consistent formatting and typography across multiple pages or columns without manually copying and pasting, which would break text styling and create version control headaches.

The real power emerges when working with dynamic content like catalogs or reports where text length varies. Instead of redesigning layouts each time content changes, flowing text automatically adapts your design to accommodate different amounts of copy while preserving your visual hierarchy.
