Use this interactive demo to learn how to flatten a PDF file in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide on how to flatten PDF in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To flatten a PDF in InDesign, click ‘File’ in the top menu.
  2. Select ‘Adobe PDF Presets’ and choose the ‘PDF/X-1a:2001’ preset.
  3. The Export dialog box will open. Review the file name and choose where the file will be saved, then click ‘Save’ when finished.
  4. A final dialog box will open. Ensure that Compatibility is set to ‘Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3),’ then click ‘Export’ to flatten your PDF.

📌 Why this matters

Flattening PDFs removes layers, transparency effects, and live text, converting everything into a single, unchangeable layer. This ensures your document displays consistently across different devices and software versions, preventing font substitution issues or missing elements when others open your file.

Beyond compatibility, flattened PDFs are essential for professional printing workflows where print shops require simplified files without complex transparency interactions that could cause color shifts or printing errors. You also reduce file corruption risks during transfer and create a final version that protects your design integrity.
