Use this interactive demo to learn how to highlight the critical path in your Microsoft Project Gantt chart.

Quick summary

The critical path in Microsoft Project is the sequence of dependent tasks that determines your project's earliest completion date. By enabling Critical Tasks highlighting in the Gantt Chart Format tab, project managers can instantly see which tasks cannot slip without delaying the project end date.

Steps

  1. Open your Microsoft Project file and confirm you are in the Gantt Chart view.
  2. Navigate to the Gantt Chart Format tab in the ribbon at the top of your screen to access critical path display options.
  3. Find and check the Critical Tasks checkbox to tell Project to highlight all tasks on the critical path.
  4. Review your Gantt chart — critical path tasks now appear in red, showing every task that directly impacts your project end date.

📌 Why this matters

Identifying the critical path in Microsoft Project is essential for effective project schedule management. The critical path reveals which tasks have zero float, meaning any delay directly pushes back the project completion date. By visually highlighting critical tasks in red on the Gantt chart, project managers can prioritize resources, proactively manage risks, and keep stakeholders aligned on delivery timelines. This built-in Microsoft Project feature is a foundational skill for any project manager using schedule-driven planning.
