Use this interactive demo to learn how to activate source tracking for Developer sandboxes in Salesforce.

Quick summary

Source tracking in Salesforce lets developers automatically detect and sync metadata changes between Developer and Developer Pro sandboxes and their local environments. Enabling it requires a quick configuration in Advanced Setup via the Dev Hub settings.

Steps

  1. Click the gear icon at the top right of the dashboard to open the settings menu.
  2. Select Open Advanced Setup from the dropdown menu.
  3. In the Quick Find search box, search for and select Dev Hub.
  4. Toggle the switch to enable Source Tracking for Developer and Developer Pro Sandboxes.
  5. Source tracking is now successfully enabled for your sandboxes.

📌 Why this matters

Enabling source tracking in Salesforce is essential for development teams who need reliable, automated detection of metadata changes across sandboxes. Without source tracking, developers must manually reconcile differences between environments, which increases the risk of deployment errors and slows release cycles. This feature is a foundational requirement for modern Salesforce DevOps workflows using tools like Salesforce CLI and scratch orgs. Activating it through Dev Hub ensures that all Developer and Developer Pro sandboxes can participate in streamlined, version-controlled deployments.
