Use this interactive demo to learn how to fix auto-generated captions in YouTube Studio.

Quick summary

YouTube Studio lets creators edit auto-generated captions directly in the subtitle editor to correct errors and improve accuracy. Navigate to your video's Subtitles panel, click the pencil icon, fix each caption line, and publish the changes in minutes.

Steps

  1. Sign in to studio.youtube.com and click Content in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the title or thumbnail of the video whose captions you want to edit.
  3. Click Subtitles in the left sidebar.
  4. Under the language row, click Edit (pencil icon) next to the automatic captions labeled subtitle track.
  5. In the subtitle editor, review each caption line and click any line that contains an error.
  6. Edit the text directly in the caption field; use video playback alongside the editor to verify timing and wording.
  7. When all corrections are made, click Publish.

📌 Why this matters

Accurate captions improve YouTube video accessibility, viewer retention, and search discoverability by ensuring auto-generated subtitles reflect the actual spoken content. YouTube Studio's built-in subtitle editor lets creators correct captioning errors without third-party tools, saving time and maintaining full control over their content. Properly edited captions also boost SEO by giving YouTube's algorithm accurate text to index, helping videos rank for the right keywords. For educators, marketers, and businesses, polished captions signal professionalism and expand reach to deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences.
