Use this interactive demo to learn how to draw a shape in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a quick and easy guide on how to draw various shapes using anchor points in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To draw random shapes in Adobe InDesign, go to the left-hand toolbar and click the 'Pen' Tool.
  2. With the tool, place your first anchor point to begin drawing the desired shape.
  3. Add points to form your desired shape with the anchor points, and finish by clicking the starting or first anchor point to close it.‍
  4. Follow the same steps to make more shapes or experiment by drawing random ones.

📌 Why this matters

Custom shapes give you complete control over your design elements without relying on stock graphics or external assets. You can create precise cutout areas for text wrapping, build unique logos and icons that match your brand perfectly, or design decorative elements that complement your layout's aesthetic.

Beyond basic graphics, these custom paths become powerful layout tools—they can serve as text containers, clipping masks, or guides that help organize complex multi-column designs in ways that standard rectangles and circles simply can't achieve.
