How to Determine Critical Path in Microsoft Project

Use this interactive demo to learn how to determine the critical path in Microsoft Project.

‍

‍

Here’s how to do it:

‍

  1. First, open your Microsoft Project file and switch to the 'Gantt Chart' view, which displays tasks as bars along a timeline.
  2. Next, navigate to the 'Format' tab in the ribbon under 'Gantt Chart Tools'. This tab contains all the visualization options we'll need to identify the critical path.
  3. In the 'Bar Styles' group, locate and check the box for 'Critical Tasks'. This will highlight all tasks that have zero float and constitute your project's critical path.
  4. There you go! Critical path tasks now appear in red on the Gantt chart. These tasks require your closest attention since any delay in them will directly impact your project's end date.

📌 Why this matters

Identifying your critical path lets you focus resources where delays matter most and negotiate realistic deadlines with stakeholders. When scope changes inevitably arise, you can quickly assess whether new requirements will push back your delivery date or if they can run parallel to critical work.

The visual clarity also helps you communicate project risks to non-technical team members and executives, showing exactly why certain tasks need immediate attention while others have breathing room for adjustments.
