Use this interactive demo to learn how to organize your social media posts with custom categories in Buffer.

Quick summary

Post categories in Buffer let you tag and organize content across social channels using a simple label system. Creating a new category takes just a few clicks inside the post composer, making it easy to filter, track, and manage scheduled content by type.

Steps

  1. In the left-side menu, select the social media channel you want to post to.
  2. Click "New Post" to open the post composer.
  3. Click "Add Tag", then select "+ Create" to add a new post category.
  4. Make sure the category box is checked to apply the tag to your post.
  5. Click "Save as Draft" or "Add to Queue" to save your post with the category assigned.
  6. Assign posts to the category by selecting the tag each time you create new content.

📌 Why this matters

Post categories in Buffer give social media managers a structured way to organize, label, and track content across multiple channels from a single dashboard. By tagging posts with custom categories, teams can quickly filter their content calendar, identify content mix gaps, and maintain a consistent publishing strategy. This feature is especially valuable for brands managing multiple content types — such as promotional, educational, or engagement posts — who need clear visibility into what is scheduled and when. Using Buffer's tagging system reduces manual tracking effort and keeps cross-channel content planning organized at scale.
