Use this interactive demo to learn how to create bleed in your Adobe InDesign documents.

‍

‍

Here’s simple and a quick guide on how to create bleed in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. When creating a new document in Adobe InDesign, go to the Preset Details and locate the Bleed and Slug section to add bleed settings.
  2. Once located, enter your desired bleed measurement in the input box. Enable the chain icon to apply the same value to all sides of the document.
  3. Once finished, click 'Create' to generate the new document with your bleed settings applied.‍
  4. Zoom in on your document and notice the red line outside the page area. This indicates that the bleed has been successfully created.

📌 Why this matters

Creating bleed prevents the white edges that appear when printed materials are trimmed to size. Print shops cut slightly inside or outside intended lines, so without bleed, you risk exposing unprinted paper along the edges of your final piece.

Bleed also gives you creative freedom to run colors, images, and design elements right to the document's edge without worrying about precision cutting. This becomes especially critical for professional materials like brochures, business cards, and posters where edge-to-edge design creates a polished, seamless appearance.
