Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up and launch a sprint in Jira.

Quick summary

Creating a sprint in Jira lets agile teams organize backlog items into time-boxed work cycles with defined goals and dates. This process takes under a minute — from clicking Create Sprint to landing on your active sprint board.

Steps

  1. Head over to Backlog in the left sidebar.
  2. Click Create Sprint at the top of the backlog section.
  3. Name your sprint to identify it within the project.
  4. Click and hold your backlog card to prepare it for assignment.
  5. Drag and drop the card into the sprint you just created.
  6. Click Start Sprint to initiate the sprint.
  7. In the pop-up box, update the sprint name, start and end dates, and a sprint goal.
  8. Your Sprint is now created and you will be taken to the sprint board.

📌 Why this matters

Creating sprints in Jira is a foundational agile practice that helps software teams break large backlogs into focused, time-boxed iterations with clear goals and deadlines. Setting sprint start and end dates — and assigning backlog items before launch — gives project managers full visibility into team capacity and delivery timelines. Jira's sprint board then becomes the single source of truth for tracking work in progress, unblocking bottlenecks, and running effective standups. For teams adopting or scaling agile workflows, mastering Jira sprint creation directly improves delivery predictability and cross-team collaboration.
