Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up and configure a Permission Set in Salesforce.

Quick summary

A Salesforce Permission Set lets admins grant specific users access to features and data without changing their profile. This demo walks through every step to create, configure, and save a new Permission Set from Salesforce Setup.

Steps

  1. Go to Setup in the top right corner of Salesforce.
  2. In the Quick Find box, enter "Permission Sets" and select it from the results.
  3. Create a new set by clicking New.
  4. In the Label field, give your Permission Set a clear name (e.g., "Sales User Permissions").
  5. Review the label and confirm the name is descriptive before proceeding.
  6. Scroll down to find System Permissions on the Permission Set detail page.
  7. Click on System Permissions to open the permissions list.
  8. Select the specific permissions users with this set will have (e.g., "Create Leads," "Edit Opportunities").
  9. Click Save to create the Permission Set, then assign it to the appropriate users.

📌 Why this matters

Salesforce Permission Sets give administrators precise, profile-independent control over what individual users can see and do — making them essential for managing access in large or complex orgs. Instead of duplicating profiles, admins can create a single Permission Set and assign it to any user who needs elevated access to specific records, objects, or system features. This approach reduces administrative overhead, improves security by following the principle of least privilege, and makes it far easier to audit and adjust user permissions as roles change. For any team looking to scale Salesforce governance without multiplying profile complexity, mastering Permission Sets is a critical skill.
