Use this interactive demo to learn how to create a frame in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to create different frames in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To create different frames in Adobe InDesign, go to the left-hand toolbar and click the Type Tool, Rectangle Tool, or Rectangle Frame Tool.
  2. The Type Tool is used to create text frames where text or paragraphs are inserted into the document.
  3. With this tool, drag into the document, and the cursor will appear where you can type your text.
  4. The Rectangle Frame Tool is used to create frames for inserting images into the document.
  5. Use this tool to drag across the document and insert or place an image.
  6. The Shape Tools are used to create different frame shapes where text or images can be inserted into the document.
  7. Click and drag this tool to make various shape frames for placing images or text in your project.

📌 Why this matters

Frames are the foundation of professional layout design, giving you precise control over where content appears on your pages. While they might seem like simple containers, frames actually determine text flow, image positioning, and overall visual hierarchy.

You can resize, move, and style frames independently of their contents, which means you can establish your layout structure first, then drop in text and images later. This workflow prevents content from dictating design and ensures consistent spacing and alignment across multi-page documents like magazines, brochures, and reports.
