Use this interactive demo to learn how to count words in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here is a step-by-step guide to counting words using the GREP Find/Change method in Adobe InDesign. Note: the ‘replacement words’ do not change your text; they are used only to calculate the word count.

‍

  1. To count the total number of words in Adobe InDesign, go to the top menu and click ‘File.’
  2. Select ‘Find/Change’ to open the Find/Change panel.
  3. Once the panel opens, select the ‘GREP’ tab.
  4. Enter \b\S+\b in the Find what field and $0 in the Change to field.
  5. In the Search dropdown, make sure ‘Document’ is selected and click 'Change All.'‍
  6. A Search Completed dialog box will appear, showing the number of replacement words, which represents the total word count.

📌 Why this matters

Accurate word counts are essential for meeting client requirements, pricing projects, and ensuring content fits within layout constraints. While InDesign lacks a built-in word counter like Microsoft Word, this GREP method gives you precise document-wide counts that include text across multiple frames, pages, and story threads.

This becomes particularly valuable when working with complex layouts where text flows through various design elements, or when you need to track word counts for billing purposes on editorial projects where every word matters for your bottom line.
