Here is a step-by-step guide to counting words using the GREP Find/Change method in Adobe InDesign. Note: the ‘replacement words’ do not change your text; they are used only to calculate the word count.
- To count the total number of words in Adobe InDesign, go to the top menu and click ‘File.’
- Select ‘Find/Change’ to open the Find/Change panel.
- Once the panel opens, select the ‘GREP’ tab.
- Enter \b\S+\b in the Find what field and $0 in the Change to field.
- In the Search dropdown, make sure ‘Document’ is selected and click 'Change All.'
- A Search Completed dialog box will appear, showing the number of replacement words, which represents the total word count.
