Try this interactive demo to learn how to convert images to CMYK in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

This is a step-by-step guide for converting images to CMYK in Adobe InDesign.

‍

Note: InDesign doesn’t allow direct RGB-to-CMYK conversion inside the app, but you can apply the conversion when exporting the file.

‍

  1. To convert images to CMYK during export in Adobe InDesign, go to the top menu and click ‘File.’
  2. Select ‘Export’ to open the Export dialog box.
  3. Choose ‘Adobe PDF (Print)’ as the format, then click ‘Save’ when finished.
  4. A new Export PDF panel will open. Go to the ‘Output’ tab.
  5. Set Color Conversion to ‘Convert to Destination (Preserve Numbers)’ from the dropdown menu.
  6. Then, choose a CMYK profile from the Destination dropdown menu. Click 'Export’ when done.

📌 Why this matters

Converting images to CMYK ensures your designs print with accurate colors that match your screen preview. Print shops require CMYK files because their machines use cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks rather than the RGB light spectrum your monitor displays.

This process prevents costly reprints and client disappointment when vibrant RGB blues and greens appear muddy or dull on paper. Professional designers build this conversion into their workflow early, but you can also rescue RGB-heavy projects at export time without rebuilding layouts from scratch.
