Use this interactive demo to learn how to rename a project in Microsoft Project.

Quick summary

To change a project name in Microsoft Project, navigate to File > Info > Advanced Properties and update the Title field on the Summary tab. This controls the name displayed in the project summary task and printed views.

Steps

  1. Open the project file you want to rename.
  2. Click the File tab to go to the Backstage view.
  3. Select Info from the left-hand menu.
  4. On the right side of the screen, under Project Information, click the Project Information dropdown menu.
  5. Select Advanced Properties from the menu.
  6. In the Properties dialog box, go to the Summary tab and enter your new project title — this controls the name shown in the project summary task and printed views.
  7. Add any additional information as needed.
  8. Click OK to confirm and save the changes.

📌 Why this matters

Renaming a project in Microsoft Project ensures that the correct title appears across all views, printed reports, and the project summary task — reducing confusion in multi-project environments. The project name set via Advanced Properties is the authoritative label Microsoft Project uses when displaying and exporting project data. Getting this right from the start helps project managers maintain clear, consistent documentation throughout the project lifecycle. This is an essential skill for anyone managing projects with Microsoft Project.
