Use this interactive demo to learn how to rename legend labels directly in the Power BI Data pane.

Quick summary

Changing legend text in Power BI requires renaming a field in the Data pane rather than through the visual formatting options. Once renamed, the updated label appears everywhere that field is used across your report, unless it has been overridden elsewhere.

Steps

  1. Go to the Data pane in Power BI.
  2. Click the three-dot menu next to the table that contains your legend field.
  3. From the menu, select Expand all to reveal all fields within the table.
  4. Select the target field, then click the three-dot menu next to that field.
  5. Select Rename from the field options menu.
  6. Enter your custom legend label in the text field.
  7. Confirm the change — the legend text updates everywhere the field is used unless it has been overridden elsewhere.

📌 Why this matters

Customizing legend text in Power BI is essential for creating clear, professional reports that communicate data accurately to stakeholders. By renaming fields directly in the Data pane, Power BI users can replace raw database field names with meaningful, reader-friendly labels that update globally across all visuals. This approach saves time compared to manually editing each chart and ensures consistency throughout the report. For data analysts and business intelligence teams, mastering legend text changes is a foundational Power BI skill that improves report readability and reduces confusion during presentations.
