Use this interactive demo to learn how to update field-level security settings in Salesforce.

Quick summary

Field-level security in Salesforce lets admins control which profiles can view or edit specific object fields. This walkthrough shows how to navigate the Object Manager and configure Visible and Read-Only permissions per profile.

Steps

  1. Click the gear icon in the top-right of the dashboard to open Settings.
  2. Select Open Advanced Setup from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click Object Manager in the top-left menu of Setup.
  4. Choose an object from the Object Manager list.
  5. In the left menu, select Fields & Relationships.
  6. Choose a Field Label object from the fields list.
  7. Click Set Field-Level Security at the top of the field detail page.
  8. Configure profile permissions by checking Visible (can see the field) and Read-Only (can view but not edit) for each profile.
  9. Click Save at the top to apply your field-level security changes.

📌 Why this matters

Field-level security in Salesforce is a critical access control feature that ensures sensitive data — such as salary figures, personal identifiers, or confidential deal terms — is only visible to the right user profiles. Properly configuring field-level security helps organizations maintain data privacy compliance, reduce insider risk, and enforce least-privilege access across their CRM. Without it, all profiles with object access can view every field by default, creating significant data exposure risk. This demo matters because misconfigured field permissions are one of the most common Salesforce security gaps that auditors and admins need to address.
