Use this interactive demo to learn how to apply a blur effect to images in Canva.

Quick summary

Canva's built-in blur effect lets you soften a specific area or an entire image directly in the Edit photo panel, with adjustable brush size and intensity — no external tools required. This step-by-step walkthrough shows exactly how to find and apply the blur in Canva's editor and save the finished design.

Steps

  1. On the edit toolbar, click Uploads to open your media library.
  2. Click the photo you want to add to the canvas.
  3. Above the edit toolbar, click Edit photo to open image editing options.
  4. Choose and click Blur from the effects panel.
  5. Use the Brush tool to paint blur over specific areas, and adjust the brush size and intensity to your preference.
  6. Select Whole image to apply the blur effect across the entire image.
  7. Drag the intensity slider to fine-tune the strength of the blur.
  8. Click Share to save and export your finished design.

📌 Why this matters

Canva's blur feature gives designers, marketers, and content creators a fast, no-code way to protect sensitive information, create depth-of-field effects, or soften backgrounds directly inside their existing design workflow. Unlike desktop photo editors, Canva's blur tool works entirely in the browser with precision brush controls and whole-image options, making professional-quality image editing accessible to anyone. This makes it an essential feature for teams who need to produce polished visuals quickly without switching between multiple applications.
