Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up automatic folder backups in Dropbox.

Quick summary

Dropbox Backup lets you automatically back up folders from your computer or external hard drive to the cloud. Setting it up takes just a few clicks from the Dropbox Preferences menu on Mac or Windows.

Steps

  1. Click the Dropbox Icon in your menu bar to open the Dropbox desktop app.
  2. Click your avatar or initials in the upper right of the Dropbox window.
  3. Click Preferences from the dropdown menu.
  4. Click the Backups tab in the Preferences panel.
  5. Click Manage backups to open the backup setup screen.
  6. Under Add a backup, select the computer or external hard drive you want to back up.
  7. Click Let's get started (for a computer) or Back up [drive name] (for an external hard drive).
  8. Check the boxes next to the folders you want to include in the backup.
  9. Click Set up to confirm your folder selections.
  10. If you are on a Mac, click Allow when prompted to grant Dropbox access to your folders.

📌 Why this matters

Dropbox Backup protects your most important files by automatically syncing selected folders from your computer or external hard drive to secure cloud storage. This means that if your device is lost, damaged, or stolen, your data remains safe and fully recoverable from any device. For individuals and teams who rely on local files, Dropbox Backup eliminates the risk of permanent data loss without requiring any manual effort. It is one of the simplest ways to ensure continuous, automatic file protection within a workflow you already use.
