Use this interactive demo to learn how to create and view backlinks between pages in Notion.

Quick summary

Backlinks in Notion automatically appear on a page whenever another page links to it, making it easy to trace connections across your workspace. Using the @ command or double-bracket shortcut [[, you can create internal page links that instantly generate backlinks on the target page.

Steps

  1. Open the page you want to receive backlinks on and note the empty backlink area below the page title.
  2. Navigate to the page from which you want to create a link to that target page.
  3. Place your cursor at the exact location in the page where you want to insert the link.
  4. Type the @ command or use double brackets [[ to trigger the page search and find the page you want to link.
  5. Press Enter or click the page name in the search results to create the link.
  6. Confirm that the internal link has been created — Notion automatically generates a backlink on the target page at the same time.
  7. Return to the target page via the sidebar menu or by clicking the link you just created.
  8. Look below the page title to see the backlink count and click it to expand the full list.
  9. Review the backlinks list to see every page that links here, and click any entry to jump directly to the linking location.

📌 Why this matters

Notion's built-in backlink feature helps teams and individuals maintain a connected, navigable knowledge base without any manual tracking. Every time you link one page to another using the @ command or [[ shortcut, Notion automatically records a backlink on the target page, giving you full visibility into how your content is related. This makes it easy to audit page relationships, retrace your thinking, and surface relevant context across large workspaces. For anyone building a second brain, project wiki, or team knowledge hub in Notion, mastering backlinks is essential for keeping information organized and discoverable.
