Use this interactive demo to learn how to create and apply tags in a Notion database.

Quick summary

Notion tags are a built-in property that let you categorize and filter database entries with custom labels. You can create new tags on the fly and reuse them across multiple items to keep your workspace organized.

Steps

  1. Open the database where you want to add tags.
  2. Locate the existing tag property in the database; if it is missing, click the add icon (+) to create one, then click inside the field to start setting tags.
  3. If no tags exist yet, create new tags by typing a name — any tag you create can be reused across other entries.
  4. Type the tag name and press Enter, or click Create to save the new tag.
  5. Confirm the new tag has been created and applied to the item.
  6. Repeat the process to create and assign as many tags as needed across your database entries.
  7. Use the same tag options for other entries in the database.
  8. Add tags to all items and use them to sort, filter, and organize your Notion database.

📌 Why this matters

Adding tags to a Notion database is one of the most effective ways to organize, filter, and retrieve information quickly. The Notion tag property lets users create custom labels that can be applied across multiple database entries, making it easy to group related items, build filtered views, and spot patterns at a glance. Teams and individuals who rely on Notion for project management, content planning, or knowledge management benefit directly from a well-tagged database. Mastering tags unlocks Notion's full potential as a structured, searchable workspace.
