Use this interactive demo to learn how to add a predecessor column in Microsoft Project.

‍

‍

Here’s how to add the Predecessor column in Microsoft Project, step by step:

‍

  1. Open your project in Microsoft Project in Gantt Chart View.
  2. In the task table on the left, right‑click any column header.
  3. Click 'Insert Column'.
  4. Start typing 'Predecessors’.
  5. Select 'Predecessors' from the list and press ENTER.
  6. The 'Predecessors' column will now appear in your Microsoft Project.

📌 Why this matters

Adding the Predecessor column gives you immediate visibility into task dependencies without clicking into individual tasks. You can quickly spot dependency gaps, identify critical path bottlenecks, and make rapid adjustments to your project timeline. Beyond basic scheduling, this column transforms how you communicate with stakeholders.

When explaining project delays or requesting resource changes, you can point directly to dependency chains in your view, making complex project logic instantly clear to non-project managers who need to understand why certain tasks must wait for others.
