Use this interactive demo to learn how to set a custom image on your Notion gallery cards.

Quick summary

This demo shows how to add an image to Gallery View in Notion by uploading a page cover and configuring the Card preview layout setting to display it as a thumbnail on each gallery card.

Steps

  1. Click the New button in the top-right corner of the gallery view to create a new entry.
  2. Click Add cover at the top of the new page.
  3. Click Change cover to open the cover picker panel.
  4. Choose Upload to add an image from your device.
  5. Select the image you want to use as the cover.
  6. Click outside the panel to exit the cover picker.
  7. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the database.
  8. Click Layout from the dropdown menu.
  9. Open the Card preview dropdown.
  10. Select Page cover to set the cover image as the gallery card thumbnail.
  11. Your uploaded image will now appear as the preview image on your Notion gallery card.

📌 Why this matters

Notion's Gallery View becomes far more useful when each card displays a meaningful visual thumbnail instead of a blank placeholder. By setting a page cover image and configuring the Card preview to show it, teams can create visually scannable databases — ideal for portfolios, project trackers, content calendars, and mood boards. This feature helps Notion users organize and navigate large databases faster, turning a plain list of entries into a rich, image-driven visual workspace. Mastering this setting is essential for anyone who wants to get the most out of Notion's database and gallery layout capabilities.
