Use this interactive demo to learn how to add and change icons on your Notion pages.

Quick summary

Notion page icons are visual symbols that appear before a page or subpage name in the sidebar, making navigation faster and more intuitive. You can add, customize, or change icons at any time using the built-in icon picker, which supports emojis, uploaded images, and a curated icon library.

Steps

  1. Understand that Notion icons are symbols used to visually represent pages — once added, they appear before the page name in the sidebar for easy identification.
  2. Note that icons are a separate property from the page title, not part of the page name itself.
  3. Open the page you want to add an icon to.
  4. Hover over the page title to reveal the Add icon option.
  5. Navigate to the Icons tab in the picker — you can upload your own image or choose an emoji instead.
  6. Explore the Icons tab for a wider selection of suitable icon options.
  7. Click on any icon you want to apply to the page.
  8. Select a color to customize the appearance of your chosen icon.
  9. Your icon is now added — it will appear before the page name in the sidebar.
  10. Confirm that your page is now displayed with the icon visible before its name.
  11. To change an existing icon, simply click on it to reopen the icon picker.
  12. Select a new icon from the available options.
  13. Your icon is now updated and the change is reflected immediately on the page.

📌 Why this matters

Adding icons to Notion pages is a simple but powerful way to improve workspace organization and visual navigation. When each page or subpage has a distinct icon, teams can scan and locate content faster without relying solely on page titles. Notion's built-in icon picker supports emojis, custom image uploads, and a curated icon library, giving users full flexibility to match their brand or workflow. This feature is especially valuable for teams managing large, complex workspaces where quick visual recognition reduces friction and saves time.
