Use this interactive demo to learn how to create and indent subtasks in Microsoft Project.

Quick summary

Adding a subtask in Microsoft Project lets you break large tasks into manageable work items nested under a parent summary task. Use the Indent Task button on the Task tab to convert any task into a subtask instantly.

Steps

  1. Open Microsoft Project and create the initial tasks for your project.
  2. Add durations to your tasks to support accurate timeline planning.
  3. Click on the task you want to convert into a subtask, making sure it is positioned directly below its intended parent task.
  4. On the Task tab, locate and click the Indent Task button (the right-facing arrow icon).
  5. The selected task is now a subtask, and the task above it automatically becomes its summary task.

📌 Why this matters

Breaking a project into subtasks is essential for effective project management in Microsoft Project, allowing teams to organize complex deliverables into clear, hierarchical work items. The Indent Task feature automatically promotes parent tasks to summary tasks, giving project managers an instant visual hierarchy and accurate rolled-up scheduling. This structured approach improves timeline planning, resource assignment, and progress tracking across every phase of a project.
