Quick summary

A Power BI Slicer is an interactive filter visual that lets report viewers dynamically segment data without editing the underlying dataset. This demo walks through every step needed to add a Slicer to a Power BI report, from opening the Visualizations pane to placing the visual on the canvas.

Steps

  1. Open the Visualizations pane by clicking it in the right-hand corner of the Power BI interface.
  2. Under the Build Visual tab, find and select the Slicer visual type.
  3. Click the Data pane to open your available fields and data sources.
  4. Tick the checkbox beside each field you want to include in the Slicer.
  5. Drag the Slicer visual to your desired position on the report canvas.
  6. The Slicer visual is now added and ready to use in your Power BI report.

📌 Why this matters

Adding a Slicer in Power BI enables report consumers to interactively filter and explore data without any technical knowledge, making dashboards more self-service and reducing dependency on analysts. Slicers improve decision-making speed by letting stakeholders instantly segment data by categories such as date, region, or product. For teams building Power BI reports, mastering the Slicer visual is a foundational skill that directly enhances report usability and data exploration efficiency.
