How to Add a Folder in Notion

Use this interactive demo to learn how to create and organize folders using Notion pages.

Quick summary

In Notion, folders are created by nesting pages inside a parent page using the /page block command. This method lets you organize subpages into a structured folder system directly within your Notion sidebar.

Steps

  1. In the left sidebar, click Add a page to create a new parent page.
  2. Enter a name for your new page, which will act as the folder.
  3. Click the blank space under the page name to place your cursor inside the page body.
  4. Type /page to open the block menu.
  5. Hover over Page in from the block menu to reveal the subpage options.
  6. Click the page name you want to add to your folder.
  7. Confirm that your selected page is now added to your folder as a subpage.
  8. Repeat the same process to add more pages to your folder.
  9. Your new page now acts as a folder where you can store and organize subpages.

📌 Why this matters

Notion does not have a traditional folder system, which confuses many new users trying to organize their workspace. By using a parent page as a folder and nesting subpages inside it with the /page block command, teams can create a clear, scalable hierarchy for any project or department. This approach keeps all related content — like a Marketing Folder containing a Weekly Planner and Content Planning pages — grouped and easy to navigate. Mastering Notion page organization is essential for teams that rely on a single workspace to manage projects, documents, and collaboration.
