How to Verify Google Search Console?

Use this interactive demo to learn how to verify your website in Google Search Console.

Quick summary

Verifying Google Search Console confirms your website ownership so Google can share search performance data with you. This demo walks through two verification methods — uploading an HTML file and adding an HTML tag — for both domain and URL prefix property types.

Steps

  1. Add a new website property to Search Console to begin the verification process.
  2. When prompted, select a property type — either Domain or URL prefix.
  3. If using the Domain option, verify your website ownership via DNS.
  4. If using the URL prefix option, choose from four available verification methods.
  5. For the recommended method, proceed with uploading an HTML file to verify your URL prefix property.
  6. Download the HTML verification file and upload it to the root directory of your website.
  7. Click Verify to complete the verification process.
  8. If you don't have server access, you can alternatively verify using an HTML tag.
  9. Copy the provided tag and insert it inside the <head> section of your website's homepage to complete verification.

📌 Why this matters

Verifying your website in Google Search Console is a critical first step for any SEO strategy, giving you direct access to search performance data, crawl error reports, and indexing status. Without verified ownership, Google cannot share actionable insights about how your site appears in search results. This demo matters because it removes the guesswork from the verification process, showing exactly how to add a property and confirm ownership — whether via DNS, HTML file upload, or HTML tag — so you can start monitoring and improving your site's search visibility immediately.
