Use this interactive demo to learn how to switch and customize the Timeline view in Linear.

Quick summary

Linear's Timeline view lets teams visualize all projects on a horizontal schedule, making it easy to track progress across teams and dates. You can filter, group, and reorder projects, then save a default view so every team member sees a consistent layout.

Steps

  1. Go to the Projects tab in the sidebar.
  2. Click Display to access the option to switch to Timeline view.
  3. Select Timeline to activate the timeline layout.
  4. Review your projects displayed on a horizontal timeline.
  5. Use filters to focus on specific teams, assignees, or priorities.
  6. Customize your timeline view by configuring groups.
  7. Set up the preferred ordering for your projects.
  8. Configure the additional timeline options to suit your workflow.
  9. Click 'Set default for everyone' to save the view for your whole team.
  10. Click 'Save' to confirm all changes.

📌 Why this matters

Linear's Timeline view gives engineering and product teams a clear, visual way to plan and track projects across time — all within the same tool they use to manage issues. Being able to filter by team, assignee, or priority and group projects into custom orderings means teams can reduce context-switching and align faster on delivery schedules. Saving a default timeline view for the entire workspace ensures every team member starts from the same shared perspective, eliminating confusion caused by inconsistent setups. For fast-moving teams, this level of visual project planning directly reduces planning overhead and improves cross-functional coordination.
