How To Use Ahrefs for Keyword Research

Updated on:
May 8, 2026
By:
Madhav Bhandari
Use this interactive demo to learn how to steal your competitor's top-ranking keywords using Ahrefs.

Quick summary

This demo shows how to use Ahrefs Site Explorer to uncover a competitor's organic keywords and export them for your own keyword research strategy. By analyzing a rival domain's top-ranking and highest-traffic keywords, you can quickly identify SEO opportunities to target.

Steps

  1. Google Search your category or niche to find relevant competitors in your space.
  2. Find a competitor that offers the same services you do and copy their domain name.
  3. Go to Ahrefs > Site Explorer from the main dashboard.
  4. Search for the competitor's domain you copied in the Site Explorer search bar.
  5. Review their Ahrefs stats including Domain Rating, Backlinks, and Traffic.
  6. Locate the number of their organic keywords on the overview page and click on it.
  7. Browse through your competitor's full list of keywords.
  8. Click on Position to sort the keywords by their Google ranking and identify their top-ranking terms.
  9. Click on Traffic to sort the keywords by the volume of page traffic they drive to the competitor's site.
  10. Hit the Export button to download the keyword list.
  11. Export as CSV so you can review and select the most relevant keywords for your own product or service.

📌 Why this matters

Competitor keyword research is one of the fastest ways to find proven SEO opportunities without starting from scratch. Ahrefs Site Explorer lets you analyze any competitor's organic keyword rankings, backlink profile, and traffic-driving terms in minutes. By identifying which keywords already send traffic to rival sites, marketers and SEO teams can prioritize high-value targets and close the content gap faster. This workflow is essential for any business looking to grow organic search visibility through data-driven keyword strategy.
