Use this interactive demo to learn how to upload files to a Replit project.

‍

This tutorial shows how to add files from your local machine to an existing Replit project using the file tree.

Note: You need a Replit account and an existing project to upload files to. Sign up at replit.com if you don't have one yet.

  1. Sign in at replit.com and open your project from the dashboard.
  2. In your workspace, click the Open Files icon in the top-right corner to open the file tree.
  3. Click the three-dot menu (⋯) at the top of the file tree panel.
  4. Select Upload file or Upload folder from the menu. A file dialog opens - select the files or folder you want to upload from your local machine and confirm.
  5. Alternatively, drag and drop files or a folder directly into the file tree to upload them without using the menu.

📌 Why this matters

Uploading files to your Replit project lets you work with existing code, assets, and configurations without rebuilding everything from scratch. You can migrate entire projects, add libraries, import datasets, or include images and other resources your application needs. This becomes especially powerful when collaborating with others or transitioning from local development. Your uploaded files integrate seamlessly with Replit's cloud environment, maintaining file permissions and folder structures while giving you access to features like real-time collaboration, instant deployment, and cross-device accessibility that wouldn't exist in your local setup.
