How to Superscript in Canva

Use this interactive demo to learn how to create superscript text in your Canva designs.

Quick summary

Canva does not have a native superscript button, but you can achieve the effect by layering a smaller text box above your main text and using the group feature to lock their positions together. This step-by-step walkthrough shows exactly how to superscript in Canva without third-party tools.

Steps

  1. On the edit toolbar, select the Text option.
  2. Add a text box by clicking the 'Add a text box' button and type your main text.
  3. Add a second text box and write the text you want to use as the superscript.
  4. Duplicate the superscript text by clicking the Addition icon.
  5. Position the superscript text box above and to the right of the first text box.
  6. Group the main text box and the superscript text box together to maintain their relative positions.
  7. Once satisfied with the positioning, click Share to save your design with the superscript applied.

📌 Why this matters

Canva is one of the most widely used graphic design tools, yet it lacks a built-in superscript formatting option — a gap that frustrates designers, educators, and content creators who need to display footnotes, mathematical notation, or trademark symbols. Knowing how to manually create superscript text in Canva using layered text boxes and the group feature lets users produce polished, professional designs without switching to a different tool. This technique works across all Canva plan types and requires no plugins or external software. Mastering this workaround expands what you can achieve inside Canva's editor and saves time on design projects that require precise typographic formatting.
