Use this interactive demo to learn how to break a Jira story into smaller work items.

Quick summary

Splitting a story in Jira lets agile teams break oversized backlog items into focused, manageable work items without losing context. Use the built-in Split Story feature from the backlog view to create new issues with custom summaries, story points, and sprint destinations.

Steps

  1. In the backlog view of your Jira scrum board, find the story you want to split and click the More Actions button next to it.
  2. Choose Split Story from the list of options.
  3. Fill in all necessary information for the new work item, including the Summary, Estimate Story Points, and Destination.
  4. To add more work items, click Add Another and repeat the same steps.
  5. Once done, click Split to confirm and proceed.
  6. The selected story in your Jira space will be split according to your configuration.

📌 Why this matters

Splitting stories in Jira is a critical agile practice that helps scrum teams keep backlog items small, estimable, and sprint-ready. Jira's built-in Split Story feature allows teams to divide oversized user stories into multiple focused work items directly from the backlog, preserving traceability and sprint planning accuracy. This reduces scope creep, improves velocity tracking, and ensures each work item can be completed within a single sprint. Teams using story splitting in Jira consistently achieve better sprint predictability and clearer task ownership.
