Use this interactive demo to learn how to fix month sorting order in Power BI visuals.

Quick summary

By default, Power BI sorts months alphabetically in visuals, breaking chronological order. Using the Sort by Column feature in Column tools, you can force months to display in correct calendar order by sorting the month name column by a numeric date column.

Steps

  1. On the Home tab, click Blank report to start a new report.
  2. Select your preferred data source to upload your data.
  3. Click Load to import the data into Power BI.
  4. Click the Table view icon on the left side panel to open the data table.
  5. Go to the Column tools tab and click Sort by Column.
  6. Select Date from the column list to sort by.
  7. Select Sort ascending to apply chronological order.
  8. Click OK — your visuals will now display months in correct calendar order.

📌 Why this matters

Incorrect month sorting in Power BI visuals is one of the most common reporting issues, causing charts to display months alphabetically instead of chronologically. The Sort by Column feature in Power BI's Column tools lets analysts fix this in seconds by mapping a text-based month name column to a numeric date column. Properly sorted month visuals improve dashboard readability, reduce misinterpretation of trends, and make reports more credible to stakeholders. This technique is essential for anyone building time-series reports or monthly performance dashboards in Power BI.
