Use this interactive demo to learn how to shuffle the order of questions in your Microsoft Forms surveys.

‍

‍

Shuffling questions is a great way to prevent "order bias" or discourage cheating if you are using Microsoft Forms for a quiz or an internal SaaS certification.

‍

  1. On your Microsoft 365 main dashboard, click the App launcher (grid icon) in the upper-left corner.
  2. From the app list, select Forms to open Microsoft Forms.
  3. Click New Form button to create a new one, or open an existing form.
  4. Head to Settings to configure response options and notifications.
  5. Under Options for responses, toggle Shuffle questions.
  6. Hit Preview to see how your form looks before sharing it.
  7. Your questions now appear in a random order for every new visitor.

📌 Why this matters

Shuffling questions eliminates order bias that naturally occurs when respondents see the same sequence repeatedly. This technique prevents participants from memorizing question positions rather than actually learning content, making your assessments more accurate.

Beyond preventing cheating, randomized questions force genuine comprehension since test-takers can't rely on pattern recognition or shared answer keys. The feature also reduces anxiety for legitimate participants who might overthink question placement as intentional difficulty progression, creating a fairer evaluation environment for everyone involved.
