Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up an automatic data refresh schedule in Power BI.

Quick summary

Scheduling a Power BI refresh keeps your semantic model automatically updated so reports always reflect the latest data. This step-by-step walkthrough shows how to configure refresh frequency, time zones, and specific refresh times directly from the Power BI service.

Steps

  1. Navigate to My workspace in the Power BI service, where all your personal reports and datasets are stored.
  2. In your workspace, locate the semantic model you want to configure for automatic refresh.
  3. Click the Schedule refresh icon next to the semantic model.
  4. Select Refresh from the available options menu.
  5. Toggle Keep data updated to ON to enable automatic refreshing.
  6. Set your preferred refresh frequency under the Refresh frequency section.
  7. Configure your time zone and select the specific refresh times you want the schedule to run.
  8. Click Apply at the bottom of the settings panel to save your refresh schedule.

📌 Why this matters

Scheduling automatic data refreshes in Power BI ensures that dashboards and reports always display up-to-date information without requiring manual intervention. For business intelligence teams and data analysts, this means stakeholders always make decisions based on current data rather than stale snapshots. The ability to configure refresh frequency, time zones, and specific run times gives organizations precise control over their data pipeline cadence. Automating Power BI dataset refresh reduces operational overhead and eliminates the risk of reports going out of sync with source data.
