Use this interactive demo to learn how to find and remove 404 pages using Screaming Frog.

Quick summary

Removing 404 pages in Screaming Frog involves running a crawl, filtering for Client Error (4xx) responses, and deleting those URLs from your workspace. This process helps SEO professionals quickly identify and eliminate broken pages that harm crawl efficiency and search rankings.

Steps

  1. Run a crawl as usual in Screaming Frog SEO Spider.
  2. Go to the Response Codes tab in the results panel.
  3. Use the Filter dropdown at the top and select Client Error (4xx) to isolate all 404 pages.
  4. Select all 404 URLs in the list using ⌘ + A on Mac.
  5. Right-click the selected URLs and choose Remove to remove them from the workspace.

📌 Why this matters

Identifying and removing 404 pages is a critical SEO maintenance task that prevents broken links from wasting crawl budget and damaging your site's search rankings. Screaming Frog SEO Spider makes it straightforward to surface all Client Error (4xx) responses in a single crawl, giving SEO teams a fast, reliable way to audit and clean up dead URLs. Keeping your site free of 404 errors improves user experience, preserves link equity, and signals to search engines that your site is well-maintained. This workflow is especially valuable for large sites where broken pages can accumulate unnoticed over time.
