Use this interactive demo to learn how to create sections and organize your Slack channels sidebar.

Quick summary

Organizing Slack channels into sections keeps your sidebar clutter-free and helps teams find the right conversations faster. You can create a section, name it, add an emoji, and drag existing channels into it in just a few steps.

Steps

  1. Go to the Home tab in Slack to view and manage your channels.
  2. Open the Channels dropdown in the sidebar, select Create, then choose Create section from the dropdown.
  3. Type a section name that reflects the category you want to group.
  4. Choose an emoji for the section for easier visual identification.
  5. Click Create to confirm and save the new section.
  6. Look for the confirmation prompt that reads "Created <section name>" to verify success.
  7. Drag and drop your existing channels from the sidebar into the newly created section.
  8. Confirm that your channel now appears nested under the new section in the sidebar.

📌 Why this matters

Keeping Slack channels organized is essential for team productivity, especially as workspaces grow and the sidebar becomes crowded with dozens of channels. Slack's channel sections feature lets users group related channels under custom, emoji-labeled categories so teammates can instantly navigate to the right conversation. This reduces context-switching, saves time searching for active channels, and makes it easier to onboard new members to a structured workspace. Whether you manage a small team or an enterprise workspace, organizing Slack channels into sections is a simple habit that significantly improves communication clarity.
