Use this interactive demo to learn how to transfer a Jira issue to a different project.

Quick summary

Moving a Jira issue to another project lets teams reorganize work without losing issue history or context. Use the built-in Move action to reassign the issue, update its type, and set a new status in just a few steps.

Steps

  1. In your Jira space, find and open the issue you want to move.
  2. Click the Actions button in the top-right corner of the issue window.
  3. Select Move from the list of available options.
  4. Use the drop-down menus to specify the destination project and set the new issue type.
  5. Click Next to proceed to the next step.
  6. Open the status menu and choose the new status you want to assign to the issue.
  7. Click Next to continue.
  8. Review the terms on the confirmation screen, then click Next.
  9. Review all pending changes and click Confirm to apply them.
  10. The selected Jira issue is now successfully moved to the new project.

📌 Why this matters

Moving issues between projects in Jira is essential for teams that reorganize work, merge backlogs, or shift priorities across different project boards. Jira's built-in Move feature preserves issue history while letting you reassign the issue type and status to match the destination project's workflow. This capability reduces manual rework and ensures traceability, making cross-team collaboration and project restructuring seamless. For any Jira-powered organization, knowing how to move issues correctly keeps boards clean and reporting accurate.
