Use this interactive demo to learn how to track user stickiness with a Mixpanel Retention Report.

Quick summary

Mixpanel's Retention Report lets you measure stickiness by tracking how users move between two key events over time. This step-by-step walkthrough shows how to configure, run, and save a retention analysis directly from your Mixpanel board.

Steps

  1. Go to your board or create a new one and select the Add to Board or the Add content option.
  2. Locate the Retention Report, which specifically measures stickiness between two events, and click to open it.
  3. Inside the report window, under Retention, select the first event.
  4. Choose the first event — this is typically the initial action that leads to a subsequent user behavior.
  5. Select the second event, which should be an action that occurs after the first event.
  6. Once your selections are made, the retention report calculates and displays retention percentages in both graphical and tabular form.
  7. When your report is ready, click Save at the top right to preserve your configuration.
  8. You can choose to go back and exit the report at any time.
  9. Use the compact view from your board to quickly measure stickiness without opening the full report.

📌 Why this matters

Measuring product stickiness is one of the most critical indicators of long-term user engagement and retention. Mixpanel's Retention Report enables product and growth teams to quantify how often users return after a key action, making it easy to identify which features drive habitual use. By configuring event-based retention analysis directly on a Mixpanel board, teams can monitor stickiness trends at a glance without rebuilding reports from scratch. This capability helps data-driven organizations reduce churn, improve activation flows, and prioritize product investments based on real user behavior.
