Use this interactive demo to learn how to detach and remove a component in Figma.

Quick summary

To make something not a component in Figma, you copy the component, paste it on the canvas, and use Detach Instance to break the component link. The result is a standalone, editable object that you can use freely without affecting the original main component.

Steps

  1. Inside your Figma design canvas, find and select the component you wish to edit.
  2. Right-click on the selection and choose Copy.
  3. Right-click anywhere on the canvas to open the context menu again.
  4. Select Paste Here from the list of options.
  5. Click the newly created duplicate object to select it.
  6. In the right-side panel, tap More Actions.
  7. Select Detach Instance to remove the component link.
  8. The duplicate is now a plain object — delete the main component and use the detached duplicate instead.

📌 Why this matters

Knowing how to detach a component instance in Figma gives designers full control over individual elements without disrupting the shared component library. The Detach Instance workflow lets you break the link between a copied element and its main component, freeing you to make unique edits that won't propagate across your design system. This is essential for one-off UI variations, client handoffs, or cleaning up designs where reusable components are no longer needed. Mastering this technique helps Figma users work faster and maintain cleaner, more intentional design files.
