Quick summary
A vertical timeline in PowerPoint can be created in minutes using the built-in SmartArt tool under the Insert tab. Choosing a vertical layout from the Process category lets you map milestones, phases, or project steps in a clean top-to-bottom flow.
Steps
- Go to the Insert tab in PowerPoint.
- Click SmartArt located in the Illustrations section of the ribbon.
- Select the Process category from the left panel of the SmartArt dialog.
- Look for a vertical layout — options include Vertical Process (simple top-to-bottom flow), Vertical Block List (good for detailed milestone descriptions), or Segmented Process (ideal for distinct phases in a quarterly report).
- Click OK to insert the chosen SmartArt layout onto your slide.
- Use the Text Pane on the left to type your milestone, then press Enter to add each new level to the timeline.
