Use this interactive demo to learn how to build a visual timeline from scratch in Google Slides.

Quick summary

This demo walks you through creating a timeline in Google Slides using the built-in Line and Shape tools, without any third-party add-ons. You will learn how to draw a timeline line, add milestone shapes, label each event with a text box, and apply fill colours to produce a presentation-ready timeline slide.

Steps

  1. In the top toolbar, click the Line icon to activate the line drawing tool.
  2. Click and drag across the slide to draw the main timeline line.
  3. In the top toolbar, click the Shape icon to open the shape menu.
  4. Hover over Shapes, Arrows, or Callouts in the dropdown menu to browse available options.
  5. Choose a circle, rectangle, or another shape to represent each timeline point.
  6. Place the shapes at evenly spaced positions along the timeline line.
  7. Double-click each shape or add a text box to type the dates, milestones, or events.
  8. In the top menu, click Fill colour to open the colour picker.
  9. Choose your desired colours to finish customizing your timeline.
  10. Your timeline is now ready to customise and present.

📌 Why this matters

Creating a timeline in Google Slides lets teams visually communicate project milestones, roadmaps, and historical sequences without specialist software. Because Google Slides is free and browser-based, any stakeholder can view or edit the timeline instantly, making it ideal for cross-functional project planning and client presentations. Knowing how to build a timeline manually — using the native Line, Shape, and Fill Colour tools — gives users full design control and keeps the workflow inside a tool they already use every day.
