Use this interactive demo to learn how to restrict a Jira project to private access in minutes.

Quick summary

This tutorial shows you how to make a Jira project private using Space Settings so that only admins and explicitly added members can view or edit project issues. Restricting project access in Jira helps teams protect sensitive work and control visibility across the organization.

Steps

  1. In your Jira space, go to the top navigation bar and click the 'More Actions' button next to the project name.
  2. Choose 'Space Settings' from the dropdown list.
  3. In the left-hand panel, click 'Access'.
  4. Click 'Open Access' in the top-right corner to open the access settings.
  5. Select 'Private' from the list of access options.
  6. Click 'Change' to proceed with the update.
  7. Tap 'Save and Make Private' to confirm and apply the private setting.
  8. The selected Jira project will now be set to private, visible only to admins and added members.

📌 Why this matters

Making a Jira project private is essential for teams that need to control who can search, view, or edit sensitive issues within their workspace. Private project access in Jira ensures that only authorized admins and explicitly invited members can interact with project content, reducing the risk of accidental data exposure. This feature is especially valuable for organizations managing confidential roadmaps, security-related tasks, or client-specific work within a shared Jira instance. By restricting project visibility, teams can enforce tighter governance and maintain cleaner, more secure project management workflows.
