Use this interactive demo to learn how to pin a shape across every slide in Google Slides.

Quick summary

To lock a shape in Google Slides, you place it on the Master slide via Slide > Edit theme, which prevents individual slide editors from moving or deleting it. This method lets you apply a consistent, locked shape across all slides in a single presentation in seconds.

Steps

  1. Open your Google Slides presentation and click Slide in the top menu to access Master slide settings.
  2. Click Edit theme to enter the Master slide editor where you can lock shapes across all slides.
  3. In Master slide mode, select the master layout where you want to add your locked shape.
  4. Click the Shape button in the toolbar to choose the shape you need.
  5. Select your desired shape from the dropdown menu — it will appear on the master slide ready for positioning.
  6. Position and resize your shape exactly where you want it — this placement will lock across all slides using this master.
  7. Customize your shape's color, border, or style — these settings will apply to every slide automatically.
  8. Click the X button to exit the Master slide editor.
  9. Your shape is now locked on the master slide and appears on all slides — users cannot accidentally move or delete it from individual slides.

📌 Why this matters

Locking a shape in Google Slides using the Master slide editor solves one of the most common collaboration headaches: team members accidentally moving or deleting branded elements like logos, watermarks, or design frames. By placing a shape in the Master slide, it is protected across every slide in the deck without any extra plugins or permissions. This technique is essential for maintaining consistent presentation design, enforcing brand guidelines, and saving time when managing large slide decks. Google Slides users who need tamper-proof visual elements — such as footers, badges, or decorative borders — benefit directly from this built-in locking method.
