Use this interactive demo to learn how to add a color highlight over an image in PowerPoint.

Quick summary

To highlight an image in PowerPoint, you overlay a semi-transparent rectangle shape on top of the image and adjust its fill color and opacity. This technique works in any version of PowerPoint and requires no third-party tools.

Steps

  1. Inside the slide canvas, go to the top menu bar and click 'Insert'.
  2. Click the 'Shapes' button in the ribbon.
  3. Find and select 'Rectangle' from the available shape options.
  4. Click on the image to insert the rectangle shape over it.
  5. Hold each resize handle and drag it so the shape fully covers the image you want to highlight.
  6. Go back to the ribbon and click 'Shape Fill'.
  7. Pick the highlight color you prefer to use.
  8. Click 'More Fill Colors' to access advanced color options.
  9. Reduce the opacity by dragging the slider or entering a value to make the highlight semi-transparent.
  10. Click 'OK' to apply the color and opacity changes.
  11. The selected image in your PowerPoint presentation will now be highlighted.

📌 Why this matters

Highlighting an image in PowerPoint is a fast, no-plugin technique that helps presenters draw audience attention to specific visual details during slideshows. By overlaying a semi-transparent colored rectangle, users can emphasize key areas of a photo or graphic without editing the original image. This method works across all modern versions of PowerPoint and is ideal for educators, marketers, and business professionals who need to create visually compelling, focused presentations. Mastering this skill improves slide clarity and reduces the need for external image-editing software.
