Use this interactive demo to learn how to generate a password in LastPass.

‍

This tutorial shows you how to use the LastPass password generator to create a strong, randomized password for any account.

Note: The password generator is available on all LastPass plans. You must have the LastPass browser extension installed and be logged in.

  1. Click the LastPass icon in your browser toolbar to open the extension menu.
  2. Select “Generator” from the menu.
  3. Set the password length using the Length slider or input field. For most business accounts, 20–24 characters is recommended.
  4. Toggle all the character types to make your password as strong as possible:
    • Lowercase (abc)
    • Uppercase (ABC)
    • Numbers (123)
    • Randomized symbols (!#$)
  5. Click the Generate icon to produce a new password. The result appears in the password preview field.
  6. Click the Copy icon to copy the generated password to your clipboard.
  7. Paste the password into the password field on the site, save your changes, then click Save or Add Password when LastPass prompts you to update your vault.

📌 Why this matters

Creating strong, unique passwords protects your accounts from breaches and credential stuffing attacks. Using a generator eliminates the human tendency to create predictable patterns or reuse variations of familiar passwords. The real advantage goes beyond just making a complex password; when you generate it directly through your password manager, it automatically syncs across all your devices and creates a seamless workflow. You'll never need to manually type these complex passwords again, making genuinely strong security as convenient as using weak, memorable ones.
