Use this interactive demo to learn how to troubleshoot and resolve WordPress maintenance mode issues.

‍

‍

Here’s how to do it:

‍

  1. Open your cPanel account, scroll down to the 'File Manager'.
  2. Select 'public_html' to open the maintenance mode.
  3. Navigate to the 'Settings' menu.
  4. Make sure to enable the 'Show Hidden Files (dotfiles) so that they are visible.
  5. Once enabled, click 'Save'.
  6. Double click the item and select 'Delete'.
  7. Hit 'Confirm' to continue the action.
  8. Go back to your error website, right click on your mouse and click 'Reload'.
  9. That's it! You have successfully fixed your WordPress site.

📌 Why this matters

When your WordPress site gets stuck in maintenance mode, visitors see an error message instead of your content, essentially taking your site offline. This typically happens when an update or plugin installation gets interrupted, leaving behind a hidden maintenance file that keeps triggering the "temporarily unavailable" screen. Beyond just restoring access, removing this file prevents search engines from indexing error pages and stops potential revenue loss from blocked visitors. You're essentially rescuing your site from digital limbo where automated processes can't complete their cleanup.
