Use this interactive demo to learn how to identify 404 errors using Google Search Console.

Quick summary

Google Search Console lets you identify 404 errors and Soft 404s that prevent your pages from being indexed. Use the Pages report under Indexing to find, review, and export a full list of URLs returning not-found errors.

Steps

  1. Select the property (website) for which you want to find 404 errors.
  2. Choose the Pages option under Indexing.
  3. Click the Not Indexed tab.
  4. Scroll down to the "Why pages aren't indexed" section and choose the Not found (404) reason.
  5. Review the list of all URLs that returned a 404 error.
  6. Export the list in your preferred format or get a shareable link.
  7. Click Page Indexing to return to the main menu.
  8. Choose the Soft 404 reason and repeat the process to export or share the error list.

📌 Why this matters

Undetected 404 errors silently hurt your site's SEO by preventing pages from being indexed in Google Search. Google Search Console's Indexing report gives webmasters and SEO teams a direct, filterable list of every URL returning a Not Found or Soft 404 status — no third-party tools required. Quickly identifying and fixing these broken URLs helps recover lost crawl budget, restore rankings, and improve overall site health. This workflow is essential for any site owner performing a technical SEO audit or monitoring post-migration errors.
