📌 Why this matters

Filing separately protects your financial liability when you're legally separated but not yet divorced. You avoid responsibility for your spouse's tax debts, penalties, or audit issues that could otherwise affect your refund or future tax obligations. Beyond the immediate protection, separate filing often reveals significant tax savings through different deduction strategies, income brackets, and eligibility for credits that disappear when filing jointly. This approach also establishes financial independence during your separation period, creating a clear paper trail that can be valuable in divorce proceedings.
